Love what you do

We're TerraPass, a small, environmental for-profit located in downtown San Francisco. Our mission is to put simple tools for fighting climate change into the hands of individuals and businesses. The two most important things we do are fund projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and educate people about the nature of and solutions to global warming.

Some things you should know about us:

  • We're proud of our for-profit status. We believe in social entrepreneurship, and we think that business is one of the most powerful forces for social change.
  • We are extremely scrappy. We believe in doing a lot with a little.
  • We are policy wonkish. This isn't feel-good environmentalism (although you will feel good working here). Carbon markets are a fascinating blend of economics, politics, and environmental science. You should acquaint yourself with the style and tone of discussion over at our blog.
  • We are extremely open with our customers. We value our integrity above all else, and we aren't afraid to tackle difficult questions in a forthright manner.

And some things about you (the ideal candidate):

  • You care about green issues, even if you're not necessarily a policy expert (yet). Carbon markets are a relatively new phenomenon, and you don't have to have a PhD in environmental finance to work at TerraPass. You should, however, be excited to learn.
  • You are excited by Web technology. TerraPass is an internet retailer. We live and breathe new media. So should you.
  • You are turned on by the idea of working with consumers. We sell stuff. Do you like to talk to customers? Do you have a good head for creating products that people will love?

Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Associate (San Francisco, CA)

TerraPass seeks to expand our capacity to source North American carbon offset projects, and we’re looking for a highly motivated individual to join our small, high-powered carbon team. This is a unique opportunity to make a difference by fostering new greenhouse gas emission reduction projects while building a company in downtown San Francisco.

Our primary need is for an Associate-level team member (1-3 years’ experience); however, we will consider staffing at the Project Manager level (5+ years’ experience) if we find a great candidate.

Our Carbon Team is responsible for the following work:

  • Work with project owners to gather necessary data to document a project's potential emissions reductions.
  • Prepare Project Design Documents detailing each project's scientific, economic, and environmental benefits.
  • Conduct technical analyses for projects new to TerraPass; field new project requests from project proponents
  • Develop and implement procedures to quantify emissions reductions;
  • Establish monitoring and verification plans, consistent with applicable standards; collect and manage data from projects under contract
  • Source new candidate projects, primarily in the United States. Build and maintain a pipeline of viable candidates to meet TerraPass’ growing purchasing capacity.
  • Negotiate financial agreements and contracts between TerraPass and project owners, developers, consultants, and brokers.
  • Manage internal and external resources to project manage TerraPass candidate projects from concept to credit issuance.
  • Build relationships with project stakeholders which establish and maintain TerraPass’ high standard for expertise and quality work

Here’s what we’re looking for in a candidate:

  • Extraordinary flexibility; aptitude and readiness to take on both highly detailed technical work and highly relationship-oriented negotiations
  • Disciplined project management capability
  • Working knowledge of the carbon-financed project lifecycle, and a passion for creating new carbon reduction capacity.
  • Experience writing formal documents within prescribed structures (such as regulatory submissions or client deliverables)
  • Wildly successful with spreadsheets
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Strong financial aptitude
  • We strongly encourage candidates with backgrounds in science and engineering. We have yet to find a candidate with a background in finance, economics, arts and humanities or social sciences who could meet our needs
